You'll find that the flame is very realistic looking. Of course that yellowness is due to deliberately poor gas combustion.
Also ventless gas logs are pretty safe. (Note I didn't say 100% safe) They're supposed to shut off if oxygen level in the room dips below 18% or so.
Still no matter how you slice it, many of these are simply NOT an efficient heat source. Since in general they're only about 10% efficient. Still, and depends on what you pay for natural gas, the cost of the gas is only about $1-1.50 an hour.
Now the conversion isn't that complex. Especially if your fireplace has a gas starter.
Just let's be clear. A few safety issues are vitally important.
1) Even though these are "ventless" gas logs think "working" CO detector.Still ventless gas burning fireplace logs are a way to simulate a cozy wood fire. Without the wood.
2) Check you local code requirements BEFORE you buy. Some cities REQUIRE you weld the damper in the open position to assure that gases can always escape. Which coincidentally also just about guarantees your heating bill will go up. Because heat will also go up the chimney like clockwork since you cant close the damper.
3) You'll want a gas shutoff in the room. Usually these are installed in the floor, outside of the firebo, on one side or the other of the fireplace.
