Must Know Kerosene Heater Safety Tips

Do You Know
These Safety Tips?

These kerosene heater safety tips can insure a warm and safe heating season.

Look to buy on kerosene heaters that have been tested and rated by Underwriters Laboratories.

Use the right grade of kerosene (1-K or clear) and never use gasoline in a space heater designed to burn kerosene. Even mixing in just a little gasoline with the kerosene increases the risk of a fire from a flare up of some sorts.

Take care not to over fill the kerosene reservoir. Any excess space above the full mark allows for some fuel expansion without causing leakage when operating your heater.

Keep your kerosene heater away from paper, drapes, furniture, bedding, clothing or anything combustible.

These heat producers are quite efficient and produce little carbon monoxide - CO. Still little isn't the same as none. Which is why it's always a good idea to crack a window to help with ventilation.

Store your 1K clear kerosene in a container used for kerosene only. In other words don't contaminate it by storing your fuel in a container that was once used to store gasoline for say the lawn mower.

Always read and understand the user manual before trying to operate the heater. Also, don't just skim through the safety guidelines, these will tell you what to do in case something goes wrong.

When refilling the tank, always do it outside far from flammable materials. Also make sure that the heater is turned off and has cooled down. DON'T refill a hot heater or when it's lit and NEVER refill the tank indoors..

It's never a good idea to try to move a lit heater.

If you're living in an apartment or a condo be sure to check if the use of kerosene heaters is permitted.

When turning the heater on or refilling the tank, don't let children do it even if you're supervising. Adults should be the one doing the refilling and switching the heater on or off. Keep the operation of any space heaters out of the hands of children.

All words to live by - literally.
